Week of June 2nd

This week I worked on my experimental set up. Over the weekend the algae had grown very well, and appeared to be maintaining a constant o2 level. This I likely a point of equilibrium between photosynthetic algae and other organisms that rely on cellular respiration. What I needed to do next was create a way to test 02 volumes between my control and treatment during both night and day. I have tested the setup I created and it appears to be functional. Next step is to run the actual tests this upcoming week.

Week of May 26

This week I worked with me new topic. I have mostly been working on a way to test weather change in net gas exchange is due to an impact of DC Current on the light dependent or to the light independent reactions. I have been using algae to try and test this. Algae is a simple photosenthetic organism, that is unlikely harmed by electricity. This makes it an optimal organism to test With. What i am attempting to do is create two chambers with algae and O2 sensors. One with an electric current and one withought. Both will go through a period of light and dark while O2 levels are recorded. Then I will compare differences between the two chambers during both light and dark periods, and see which (dark or light) produces the greatest variant vroom the control. This is the first step in isolating the cause of the change in gas exchange caused by an electric current.

Week of may 19

the past 2 weeks we have begun our genious hour and taken the ap exam. Phew, finally over! After the exam, I had started looking I to a potential experiment involving the minipulation of water potential to get water to flow uphill. I was hoping to design a model for a potential type of water pump, that would be eapecially helpful to ski resorts, but it ended up looking to be too difficult a task to complete over the course of the next few weeks. This week I decided to move to a new experiment, shocking plants more or less. Earlier in the year we did a lab on environmental changes that effect photosynthesis. Our group applied an electric DC current to it. I would like to go back to this, because the current actually stimulated rate of gas exchange and therefore rate of photosynthesis. It is unclear why this happened and I hope to examine this by looking more closely at photosynthesis and isolating what in particular is being effected.

Week of April 28

How did you do on your work?

I got everything I needed to do done eventually. I didn't realize that there was hw one night, but got it done in study hall. We spent a large portion of this week working with our labs, which I feel that I contributed to quite a bit. I was only a bit lazy towards the end of the week with the write up portion.

What do you think you understand well?

I think I understood the podcasts about communities and ecosystems pretty well, everything made sense when we went over them in class. I also felt I had a firm grasp on the concepts of transpiration, and on what could possibly effect it.

What could you improve on?

I think I need to improve on sleeping more at night. Not sleeping enough/feeling a bit ill made me a bit unproductive especially towards the end of the week.

What strategies will you use?

I will try to get homework done sooner, so I don't have to stay up so late doing it, so I can sleep and be rested for first block.

How does the work connect to biology?

The major non lab content we covered was communities and ecosystems, which represent biology on a macro scale. Shows how biologists study these areas to provide information about how human I retraction is effecting the rest of the living world.

Heart week

I was only here for the first few days of heart week, but it was pretty interresting. I'm not so sure being a surgeon is in my future after this week. Going inside the heart and directing them was a bit challenging for me. I was however interrested in the anatomy of the heart and how it functioned and what veins and arteries were called what and went in and came out where. It was kind of a cool intro to anatomy and biology on a larger scale then we are used to learning about. I think the week was a success for me, besides not being here for a good part of It, because I think in understood the anatomy of he heart pretty well, even though I didn't do much cutting.

Week #8

How did you do on your work?

I think I did okay, it fealt like a short but stressful week with SAT's and shortened class Friday, but I still managed to get everything done. Everything just felt a bit rushed.

What did you understand well?

I understood the stickleback fish expression packet pretty well. Along with the nutrician project. I ended up doing reasearch for nutrician in animals for the group mostly, and it made a lot of sense to me.

What can you improve on?

I could have spent more time on the project. I should have gotten a jump start on it the night after SAT's so that I wouldn't have had to stay up so late Thursday night.

How will you improve on this?

I will work on time management, this seems to be a common issue of mine.

How does the work fit into the description of the course?

We are learning about expression and how not all genes are expressed all the time and how they are regulated, and how regulation is achieved. This fits in with current studies trying to figure out what all of our noncding DNA does, believed to be regulatory.

March 27-31

How did you do on your work?

I did pretty well, getting everything done on time, and done pretty completely. I spent quite a bit of time on the fruit fly lab, I feel as if I did pretty well and went pretty In depth on that.

What did you understand well?

I understand inheritance patterns pretty well, along with associated phenotypic and genotype count rations. I understood how to deduce genotype from pedigree trees, as well as figure out complex inheritance paterns.

Where do you think you could improve?

I think I could be more productive with class time, I spent a lot of time observing our new class pets/corn snake food. This caused me to have more work to do at home.

What strategies will you use to improve?

I will try to get work done first, then I can allow myself to get distracted, wheather that be by mice, students or studying for other classes.

How does this work fit I to the course description?

We are studying how traits Are inherited. This goes along with biology specifically the information domain. As we learn about DNA and identification of people by traits and what traits represent.

Reflection #6

How did you do on your work?

I did pretty well. Got almost everything done in a timely manner. I was also understanding and relearning inheritance pretty easily.

What do you think you understand well?

I understand the dominant/recessive inheritance pretty well, it all dealt like review and just resolidified it with me.

Where do you think you could improve?

I could have done the of the assigned hw Of  punnent squares from Monday night, but forgot, doing instead only the bioblog.

What strategies will you use to improve?

I could ask around if I forget what hw was, or email mrs. Cole.

How does the work fit in with the narrative of AP bio

We are learning about inheritance patterns, which play an important role in analyzing patients for biological relatedness.

Cancer reflection

Three things that I learned
1: there are 140 some odd genes that are concidered cancer genes
2: all cancer is caused from genetic inheritance or genetic mutation, either way genes are 100% in charge of cancer.
3 shorter chromosomes can have more cancer genes than longer ones, cancer genes are not proportionately distributed among chromosomes.

Two things that surprised me
1: scientists were able to work on this gene hunt together, and felt comfortable sharing results with eachother withought feeling protective of their own research.
2: it surprises mehow much is known about cancer, how much we learn from research every day, but how limited we remain in treatment options. 

One question 
People claim certain foods or vitamins or what not, can lessen the chances of getter ng cancer. If all cancer is genetic, then these supplements must prevent mutation? How can environment cause these mutations besides the obvious smoking or radiation? Can diet cause mutations?

Week of March 10th

4.4, 4.5, 4.7

How did you do on your work?

I got all of my work done. I will say I felt pretty lazy the first half of the week, doing one of the vodcasts late, and not putting too much effort into the lab write up, but I felt as I did much better the half of the week, completing and understanding the vodcasts and the mitosis work packet.

What do you think you understand well?

I understand well, the concepts involved with cell cycle. I understand the differant phases, what happens during them, what checkpoints there are and what kinds of regulation occur.

Where do you think you can improve?

I think I could improve by studying the phases within mitosis/meiosis. I get the main idea of the progression of cell devision, but would have difficulty naming the phases and purposes of each contained in mitosis/meiosis.

What strategies will you use to improve?

I will need to study these, I think that is really the only way for me to solidify them in my head, I just need to maybe just commit them to memory.

How does the current work fit in with the context/narrative of the course?

We are learning about cell cycle and devision, which is super important to healthy growth of organisms. The content covered, goes over concepts important to the causes of cancer or other problems with cell cycle. It connects directly to the medical field, showing insight to what cancer is on a cellular and genetic level.

Week of March 3rd

How did you do on your work?

I did everything I needed to on time. There were no vodcast this week to do, so work load was pretty minimal. I looked over the pcr lab to understand the concepts and procedure, also to answer the questions.

What do you understand well?

I feel as If i have a firm grasp on how pcr works. Also, I have a pretty good understanding of electrophoresis as I've done it a few times now.

Where do you think you can improve?

I think I could improve on my lab edicate, namely watching what I eat before, also, maybe work on a steadier hand as to not puncture gell.

What strategies can you use to improve?

I can be more conscious of the complexity of labs, and think twice before doing something, in this case eating Oreos.

How does this work fit into the narrative/context of the course ?

It connects technology to biology, allowing for better understanding of our own genes, and of the phylogeny of those around us. We are able to see how real world DNA samples are translated Into viable information.

Weekly reflection 2/6-2/10

Standards: 4.1, 4.2

How did you do on the work?

This week I think I did okay on the work. I did the packets mostly in class and got them out of the way. I did part one of the vodcast for Tuesday I believe, but I saved the other 2 parts for the last second, didn't do so great on that. Emma and I also got most of the project done on Thursday, which was good.

What do you think you understand well?

I think between the playdoe project and the rockpocket packet, I was able to resolidify in my mind how translation works, what the biological pieces and mechanisms are. I also learned a lot about the 3 differant kinds of mutations, and the 3 differant results, and why those results make sense.

Where do you think you can improve?

Well I took much better notes this week on vodcast, but I spread them out badly, leaving the last 2 for the last second. Poor timing for homework when we are not told when to do it.

What strategies will you use to improve?

I will have to spread homework out better when we are not told when we have to do it. I don't think I was procrastinating, just not really thinking about it, so maybe be more aware of due dates in the future and be realistic about how long it will take.

How does the work we are doing fit into the context/narrative of the course?

What we did this week was mostly packets solidifying transcription and translation. The project was just one final push to express our understandings of these concepts. This fits into information unit, specifically depicting the proceses that use DNA as a formation to directly create proteins that are crucial to biological systems as we have already learned. Also learning about bio technology in the vodcast shows insight to not only understanding these concepts, but using this knowledge to design medical or research technology.

Weekly reflection 3/5

How did you do on your work?

I feel as if I did well, went through the in class packets and vodcast for homework and did enough to understand the concepts being thought.

What do you think you understand well?

I understand all of the major concepts of the history of genetics, and basics about DNA and information. I may lack to remember some scientists names or lack the ability to Match a protein name to a function, but generally understand what proteins are doing.

Where can you improve?

Hmm, well organization, maybe take more organized notes or write more. I understand what I write down, but it appears sloppy and unorganized, and could be improved.

What will you do to improve?

I can put in more effort at night to taking notes, more substantial and organized.

How does the work we are done by fitninto the narrative/context of this course?

We are learning about DNA, the unit of information that is the source of the codes for every protein in our body. Understanding how it works, replicates and is transcribed will help to understand the picture of how cellular functions work.
